A large, high-quality African bloodstone gemstone sphere is an impressive and mystical piece. The sphere displays a deep, dark greenish base color interspersed with irregular, vivid red speckles or flecks reminiscent of drops of blood – hence the name “bloodstone” or “heliotrope”. These red inclusions are caused by the presence of iron oxide, which gives the sphere a dramatic and powerful appearance.
