Der aztekische und der Maya-Kalender sind faszinierende kulturelle Artefakte, die tief in der Geschichte Mesoamerikas verwurzelt sind. Der Aztekenkalender, auch als Tonalamatl bekannt, besteht aus zwei Hauptzyklen: dem Tonalpohualli, einem 260-Tage-Zyklus, der aus 20 Tageszeichen und 13 Zahlen besteht, sowie dem Xiuhpohualli, einem 365-Tage-Zyklus, der aus 18 Monaten zu je 20 Tagen und einem abschließenden kurzen Monat von 5 „unglücklichen“ Tagen besteht. Diese beiden Zyklen interagieren miteinander und erzeugen einen gemeinsamen 52-jährigen Kalenderzyklus, den „Bündel des Jahrhunderts“ oder „Bündel der 52 Jahre“.
Der Maya-Kalender hingegen ist komplexer und besteht aus verschiedenen Zyklen, darunter der Tzolk’in (260 Tage) und der Haab (365 Tage). Die Maya verwendeten auch den Langen Zählkalender, der in kürzester Zeit astronomische Ereignisse genau verfolgen konnte. Dieser Kalender erreichte den 13. Baktun am 21. Dezember 2012, ein Datum, das fälschlicherweise als apokalyptisches Ende interpretiert wurde.
